Crawlspace Mold and Your Health

If you have mold growing in your crawlspace you may be exposing your family to unknown health risks due to exposure to mold spores, dust mites, organic decomposition gases and other nasty environmental hazards introduced into your living area due to the stack effect.

Allergy to mold spores & toxinsLuckily, not all people are sensitive to molds but if you are you may experience symptoms like nasal stuffiness, skin irritation, sneezing, coughing, throat irritation and possibly more severe reactions.

Individuals with lung disease or respiratory problems are more susceptible to possible serious lung infections if exposed to mold. Additionally there is evidence that children exposed to mold in their home environment may develop shortness of breath, respiratory illness and even asthma due to prolonged exposure.

These reactions are due in most part due to the toxins that the molds release into the air rather than the mold or mold spores themselves.

Of particular concern is the black mold species of fungus of which Stachybotrys Chartum is a member. Black mold is a type of fungus that is very dark green or black and often has a distinct musty or damp, mildewy smell. Black mold poisoning is a form of mycotoxicosis, which may occur if a person breathes in too many mycotoxins over an extended period. Individuals that would be considered high risk for developing more severe respiratory conditions would include those with asthma, seasonal allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of black mold exposure may include:

  • coughing
  • wheezing
  • a stuffy nose
  • a runny nose
  • red eyes
  • itchy skin or eyes
  • a sore or itchy throat
  • nosebleeds

With extended exposure problems can worsen to include:
